PICTURE IMPERFECT

A public exhibition in collaboration with The Island, a local charity. This community exhibition is to showcase not only photography taken remotely during the pandemic but also the very first short film MAKIKO has made with all the handwritings from her workshop at the youth centre when COVID-19 restrictions were easing up. The film includes her original ambience recording of the city of York as well.

After having successful exhibitions in U.K. and Japan, MAKIKO published the exhibition series “Paradise Revisited” as “BATTLESHIP ISLAND” from Dewi Lewis Publishing. It was shortlisted for the Best Published Photobook at the 7th SIPF 2020.

Food For Being Looked At

Packing lunchboxes for a child with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) was a challenge. A collective image of the lunch boxes MAKIKO prepared from January to December 2011. This experimental project was given by Alex Majoli of Magnum Photos.

Exhibited the project on an uninhabited Nozaki Island with a history of “hidden” Christians, sponsored by the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and in association with LSE Arts.

Exhibited “TRAILS TO PRAYER” and unpublished work shot in Yakushima Island in collaboration with Maison Rucher during Les Rencontres de la Photographie, Arles France.
Paradise Revisited (BATTLESHIP ISLAND series)

Exhibited the 26 images shot on Battleship Island, a 3DCG multimedia presentation, a 3D printed construction model and others. Collaborated with Nagasaki City and Nagasaki University, Japan. Sponsored by the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and in association with LSE Arts.
